It's Courtney here and I want to answer a question that many of you are asking. The question being ["How do I get better at English?"].
I want to say from personal experience as a Japanese learner, the answer is to USE ENGLISH EVERYDAY!
You are probably thinking, "I don't know grammar....I know only a little vocabulary....who can I use English with?" and so on....
First tip:
-You don't need a partner or native speaker to practice English. You can practice on your own.
Whether it is watching an overseas drama, listening to western music or news, or reading a children's book and I mean do this everyday! This counts as practicing English. You are subconsciously learning new phrases and vocabulary without knowing it.Then when you hear it again, you can recall this words or phrase again. If you challenge yourself and try to use that new word or phrase in a conversation or journal entry, you now have output. Input (listening, reading, writing) and output are two necessary factors when learning a language. You master both and you are set to go!
Personally, when I study I Japanese, I listen to the conversations around me. If I hear a new word, I write that word down, look it up and try to use it myself. I highly recommend this.
- Second Tip
Shyness or fear of embarrassment is a small road block. Just push that out of the way. Seriously. I have lived in Japan for 12 years now and I still make mistakes but who cares? I tried, and that is what matters. If this is a big concern for you, try talking when you are alone. it may sound silly, but it is a major confidence boaster. If you are driving or cleaning the house or taking care of the kids, throw out some English words that you know. There is no problem with Japanese-english. It a step in learning and if you speak with a native and make a mistake, it's almost always 99% that they could understand or get a picture of what you were trying to say. So it is NEVER a problem.
Third Tip
-Pronunciation is NOT the biggest factor when improving English. There are many fluent speakers of Japanese yet they don't sound Japanese. So do not think that you have to sound American, British or Australian to be a great speaker. If you know the word and how it is most likely pronounced, you do not have a problem. 100% perfection is impossible so do not stress the little stuff.
So, I told you my answer and now act! Use english everyday and it doesn't have to be speaking or long hours everyday. 5-10 minutes is just fine!
Trust me, you will see improvement in no time!
